We sat down in the barber chair with Gayna Maxwell Director of Maxwell & Charlie Boutique Barbers, to get the inside scoop on where to go to get the best of Surry Hills and how she became a dynamo business owner.
Gaynas’ career in hairdressing started with humble beginnings in her native country New Zealand where she completed a traditional hairdressing apprenticeship. After many years working extensively within the industry – abroad and in Australia, she found herself working in a number of salons through Sydney until ultimately established a home for herself here in Surry Hills.
After previously managing a successful barber shop in Surry Hills, she decided to launch her own business mid-way through 2015 and has only seen great growth and reception. Maxwell & Charlie is your genuine retro barber shop, with 1950’s fit out interior at the front of her Victorian terrace at 468 Bourke Street. Sharing the space with her adorable schnauzer Charlie, Gayna tells us about the benefits of running the show.
“Working in a salon can feel like you’re part of a production line, it’s great being able to finally call the shots, and not follow other peoples rules, and run my business my own way. Combining age and experience I thought to myself why not? Immersed in such a vibrant area I love the laid back culture and community vibe Surry Hills has to offer, also there’s nothing better than being able to get to work without a 45min commute. When I first started I was ready for work an hour earlier than necessary then I found myself thinking….wait on a minute all I have to do is walk downstairs and I am at work.”
Coming with an abundance of experience you can rest assured you are in safe hands, a barber wielding a cut-throat razor can be a little intimidating, Gayna makes you feel at ease and comfortable.
Surry Hill’s best kept secret?
“There are a load of boutique shops and businesses that really make the area special, there aren’t a huge number of large chain/franchise shops.
